FAQ

Learn more from our FAQ

1. Is cryo grinding viable for all materials?

It is only efficient or cost-effective for certain ones. But for those specific materials it produces superior results. Cryo grinding is effective for grinding flexible and organic materials—such as commercial food products and many polymers—that embrittle only at cryogenic temperatures.

Cryo grinding is not an efficient milling technique for materials that are already brittle at ambient temperatures, or ones that will not embrittle when transitioned to cryogenic temperatures. These include thermoset resins, epoxies, brittle inorganic compounds (ceramics, glasses, and minerals), and fibrous materials (carbon and fiberglass).

2. What can you effectively grind?

In our 30 years of operation we have had success grinding over 800 different materials. If you are interested in grinding a novel or exotic material our engineers are happy to offer you a consultation.

3. Are there other material constraints?

For optimal efficiency your material should be delivered in 0.2” (5mm) sized pellets or smaller. Our polymer and food grinding centers can process larger sized materials, but additional coarse grinding may be required, which will affect the toll rate.

4. How finely can your systems grind?

Both OGL plastic and food grinding centers are capable of producing average particle sizes of 10μm or lower. However, costs for ultra-fine grinding in this range vary considerably depending on specific material properties.

5. Can you grind wet or oily materials?

Yes, they are well-suited for cryogrinding. However, be aware that the processed material will become slurry when returned to ambient temperature.

6. What is your expected yield efficiency?

For most materials our yields fall in the 95%-98% efficiency range. However, as with any milling process, the finer the target grain size and the narrower the distribution range, the lower the yield.

7. What is your daily/yearly grinding capacity?

We are upgrading our capacity. For most raw materials we can process up to 600 metric tons per year. That capacity can vary depending on the properties of your specific material and your desired target particle size.

8. How long does it take to process and return test samples?

Usually we return processed materials within two weeks, but depending on the job complexity and testing required it may take longer. Please feel free to schedule a consultation with one of our engineers to determine what the specific timeline for your grinding job would be.

9. Do you have a minimum order volume?

We accept all sized orders, from several pounds for sample processing, up to several tons for commercial processing. We have many different milling systems that can be configured to process any sized order.

10. Do you accept small test orders only?

Yes, we have dedicated test milling systems. There is no limit on the number of test grinds we will process for you, but test grinding is billed on a per-day rate. Depending on the number of runs or the total test volume you need processed, you may need to reserve the test system for more than one day. Please feel free to contact us to discuss options.

11. Does cryogenic grinding dehydrate raw materials?

No, by design it does not affect water or oil content. Both water and oil content within your material is frozen (embrittled) to cryogenic temperatures before grinding. This is one of the key advantages of cryo grinding over conventional milling processes, where heat from milling will affect the water and oil compositions.

12. How do you prevent contamination?

All of our facilities are ISO 9001 certified, and our food centers are further HACCP and FSSC 22000 (ISO 22000 and ISO/TS 22002-1/4 inclusive) certified, to offer the highest possible quality controls. All delivered materials are kept in cold storage before and after processing. The grinding floor, including all equipment and peripherals, are meticulously maintained to avoid the risk of foreign materials entering the milling system.

13. Do you sell cryogenic grinding equipment?

No, OGL does not sell individual pieces of machinery, cryo grinding systems, instrumentation or peripherals. Our partner divisions in OGL sell liquid nitrogen and other industrial gases in Japan only.
